Do we need commercial auto if employees use their own vehicles?

Maybe. Business-owned or regularly business-used vehicles need a commercial-auto review, while hired and non-owned auto can address a business's liability when employees use personal or rented vehicles for company work. The available protection depends on the covered-auto symbols, the vehicle use and the policy form; it is not a substitute for reviewing the driver's own coverage or a regulated carrier's filing requirement.

The vehicle baseline

California requires financial responsibility for vehicles on its roads. Commercial and fleet vehicles can also have additional requirements based on the vehicle and operation.

What the operation changes

Vehicle ownership, regular business use, employee driving, passengers, cargo, radius and regulated-motor-carrier authority can each change the form, limit or filing needed.

What we review

We map vehicle schedules, drivers, use, contracts and required filings before comparing liability, physical-damage, hired and non-owned auto, cargo and excess options.

Commercial auto addresses vehicles used for business, including third-party liability and physical damage. It can be coordinated with hired and non-owned auto, cargo and regulated-motor-carrier requirements when the operation calls for them.

The triggers
we hear most.

The account owns vehicles — even one.

Personal auto policies can restrict or exclude business use. A vehicle titled to the business or used regularly for work should be reviewed for commercial auto. Local service vehicles, delivery fleets and regulated trucking need different limits and forms.

Employees drive their own vehicles on company business.

Hired and non-owned auto can address a business's liability when employees drive personal or rented vehicles for company errands, deliveries or client visits. We review who drives, how often and what the vehicle is used for.

It's a regulated motor carrier (interstate trucking).

For-hire interstate motor-carrier requirements vary by authority, vehicle and cargo. When a BMC filing or MCS-90 applies, the insurer files the required proof; we coordinate the process and verify the filing is in place.

A contract requires higher auto limits than the account carries.

Larger customers, GCs and shipping brokers all demand specific auto limits — often higher than the federal or state minimum. We match to markets that will bind the exact limit the contract requires, with umbrella stacking where needed.

Inside the
policy.

Auto liability

Third-party bodily injury and property damage caused by the insured's vehicles — at the limit required by state law, federal regulation or customer contract.

Physical damage (collision and comprehensive)

Damage to the insured's own vehicles — collision for accidents, comprehensive for fire, theft, vandalism, weather and other named perils.

Hired & non-owned auto

Liability extension for vehicles the business rents, leases or hires — plus liability for employees driving personal vehicles on company business.

Cargo and specialty endorsements

Motor truck cargo is a distinct form for freight in the insured's custody. Review it with the auto programme alongside refrigeration, hazmat, towing or specialty-cargo exposures where relevant.

Where buyers
get caught out.

Employee injury

Workers hurt in a company vehicle on the job sit with workers' comp — though some forms include modest medical payments cover.

Personal use disputes

Commercial auto covers business use. Heavy personal use of company vehicles needs the right form and endorsements — or a permitted-use exclusion can bite.

Diminution in value

The loss of resale value after an accident is usually excluded. Some specialty markets offer it as an endorsement.

How we place
this line.

Appetite matched in-house

Every submission gets matched internally against the carrier relationships most likely to write it — not shopped blind into a dozen inboxes.

Every hour risks the client

A slow market costs you the account. Matched submissions move straight to underwriting, and you're kept posted, even when the answer is no.

Just send the file

No 40-page form, no repeated questions. Send what you've got and we take it from there.
